Shakespeare and the Rom-Com: Love's Labor's Lost Actually
How did Shakespeare contribute to the development of Romantic Comedies? In this preshow lecture, Dr. Buhler will count some of the ways with the help of Richard Curtis's classic Christmas rom-com film, Love Actually. Multiple but related storylines, complicated relationships, a mix of nationalities, misinterpreted notes, unresolved situations, the challenges of class difference, shrewd references to popular culture, acknowledgments of tragedy along with plenty of laughs – they are all present in Shakespeare, as well as in Curtis. We promise that there will be no serious spoilers, at least regarding Love's Labor's Lost. Dr Buhler has signed an oath to that effect. (Wait, was that a spoiler?)

Stephen Buhler is a co-founder and the Resident Scholar of Flatwater Shakespeare Company. Aaron Douglas Professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the author of Shakespeare in the Cinema: Ocular Proof, he has published widely on early modern English literary culture. His recent work in theatre includes directing our first-ever production of The Winter's Tale and also directing Angels Theatre Company's staged reading of Romeo and Her Sister, a new play by Jillian Blevins about 19th-century actor Charlotte Cushman.

Love's Labor's Lost: "An early work in William Shakespeare’s canon, Love’s Labor’s Lost is a biting exploration of when expectations meet reality. When a self-aggrandizing king and his court swear off love, they are shaken by the arrival of a powerful woman and her entourage. This challenge to their short-sighted goals and prejudices drives them to comical extremes as they attempt to both keep their oath, and fulfill their hearts’ desires. Through sharp language and absurd humor, this show dives into what we expect from ourselves and others, what makes love worth winning, and what we find when we stop looking for what we think we want. A blistering 75-minutes of comedy, full of hijinks & love that you will not want to miss!"
